Signs You Might Have Myasthenia Gravis

A rare disorder called myasthenia gravis (MG) damages the muscles and nerves, resulting in weakness and exhaustion. The name “myasthenia” means muscle weakness, while “gravis” refers to its seriousness. Although it is a manageable condition, recognizing its signs early can help in seeking the right treatment. Here are some common symptoms of Myasthenia Gravis.

Muscle Weakness That Worsens With Activity

Muscle weakness is one of the main signs of myasthenia gravis. It often starts in the muscles controlling eye movement and the face. People with MG may notice their eyelids drooping or have difficulty holding their head up. The weakness tends to worsen after periods of physical activity and improves with rest.

Difficulty Speaking and Swallowing

Another common sign of Myasthenia Gravis is difficulty with speaking and swallowing. You might find that your voice becomes soft or hoarse, or that eating and swallowing become tiring or difficult. In severe cases, it could lead to choking on food or drinks.

Drooping Eyelids

Eyelid drooping, or ptosis, is one of the most noticeable signs of Myasthenia Gravis. This occurs when the muscles responsible for lifting the eyelids become weak, making one or both eyelids droop noticeably. It can cause vision problems, as the eyelids may partially block your line of sight.

Blurred or Double Vision

Double vision, or diplopia, occurs when the muscles that control eye movement weaken. This results in the eyes not working together properly, causing blurred or double vision. It may happen intermittently and can affect only one eye or both.

Difficulty Breathing

In extreme situations, breathing muscles may be impacted by myasthenia gravis.  Breathing problems or shortness of breath may result from this, particularly after exertion.  It’s critical to get medical help right away if this occurs.

Fatigue and Weakness Throughout the Day

One common symptom is fatigue, which frequently becomes worse over the day. People with Myasthenia Gravis may feel increasingly tired, even after minimal activity. Resting usually helps relieve the tiredness, but it may return as you use your muscles again.

Difficulty with Everyday Tasks

Simple tasks, such as brushing your hair, lifting groceries, or climbing stairs, may become harder as the muscles weaken. People with Myasthenia Gravis may feel like their muscles are too tired to perform basic activities.
